What's beyond HD?

Many of the best-performing TVs currently available provide 1080p display resolution. Some people have found this confusing because the two official HDTV broadcast formats are 1080i and 720p. Besides exceptional picture detail and dimensionality, the great thing about 1080p is that it actually has higher resolution than either HDTV format, so it can display them without downconverting and sacrificing picture detail. We offer products that can handle these signals!

If you've been waiting for HDTV, you are too late!!! It's here, but the good news is, you can eXtenHD beyond HD

Here are some important dates to remember:

  • March 1, 2007: The final requirement of the tuner mandate calls for all TVs with screens measuring 13" or larger to include an over-the-air digital tuner. Again, this won't apply to monitor displays.
  • February 17, 2009: In legislation passed in early Feb. 2006, the U.S. Congress chose this date for the "analog shutoff," when all TV stations will be required to turn off their analog signals and broadcast only digital signals. The measure was part of the budget bill signed into law by President Bush.

Until the transition to digital television is complete, TV stations will continue broadcasting on their analog channels while phasing in digital broadcasts on a separate DTV channel. While many stations missed earlier deadlines to convert their broadcasts to digital formats, most commercial and public TV stations are currently broadcasting digitally at least part of the time.

What's beyond HD?

The ATSC Planning Committee has undertaken a major demonstration project of the Advanced Common Application Platform interactive TV system. Two worlds that were once barely connected – television and the Internet – are now on the verge of combining into an entirely new service: namely, interactive television. Thanks to the ongoing transition of television from analog to digital, it is now possible to efficiently combine video, audio, and data within the same signal.

The term "interactive television" is broad and not entirely well defined. However, it certainly includes the following general categories:

  • Customized news, weather and traffic
  • Stock market data, including personal investment portfolio performance in real-time
  • Enhanced sports scores and statistics on a selective basis
  • Games associated with programs
  • On-line real-time purchasing of everything from groceries to software without leaving home
  • Video on-demand
